ULUSLARARASI AKADEMİNİN ÇİFTE STANDART ZİHNİYETİNE ÖRNEK
Paris Siyasi Bilimler Akademisi’nden İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi’ne bildirilen iptal gerekçesinde, “Aldığımız bilgiye göre üniversitenizden “Barış İçin Akademisyenler – Bu Suça Ortak Olmayacağız” başlıklı bildiriye imza atan bir öğretim üyesinin üniversite ile ilişkisi kesilmiştir. Bunu kabul edemeyiz.” dendi.
HYPOCRISY OF EUROPE IS NOW TAKING PLACE IN UNIVERSITIES
An unprecedented scandal took place in Sciences-Po Paris, one of the eminent politics and research universities in France.
Sciences-Po Paris has cancelled a joint conference titled ‘Refugee Issues in Europe and Turkey’s Role’ which was planned to take place next week with Istanbul Aydin University, claiming ‘Turkey’s oppression of freedom of expression towards academics’
French University has claimed a justification which is in line with terrorist groups’ ideas, who has attacked Turkey’s territorial integrity and independence. The dead for the conference was made two months ago and was cancelled three days before the actual conference was scheduled to take place. Science-Po Paris, sending their notice of cancellation to Istanbul Aydin University, provided the grounds for cancellation and said that firing of an academic for signing a petition titled ‘The Academics for Peace: We Will Not Be a Part of This Crime’ was the main reason of the cancellation.
Istanbul Aydin University President Dr. Mustafa Aydin stated that series of conferences and meetings on immigration crises in Europe are going to take place as planned on March 22-25, 2016. “One of the conferences were scheduled at Paris Political Science Academy. Unfortunately it was cancelled three days before its scheduled date. The reasons given for the cancellation are of ‘The Mind of the Middle Ages’
“Paris Political Science Academy had agreed to organize a joint conference with Istanbul Aydin University six months ago. The conference was going to be organized last November. Unfortunately, the city of Paris was shaken by the terrorist attacks. Out of respect for the victims of the terrorist attack and the mourning of the French people, with our suggestion, we have decided to postpone the conference to March 2016. The very same Academy is cancelling a scientific conference for the reason that our university broke off its relationship with an academic who supports a terrorist organization that targets Turkey’s state and national integrity under the claim of a freedom of expression. This is a different way of putting a very well known scenario onto a stage. Istanbul Aydin University is one of the most preferred and leading universities in Turkey with its over 37,000 students. We have exemplary agreements with 500 international universities which include many prestigious universities around the globe. We are a dynamic university with international appeal. Negative approaches such as this one disappoint us. Unfortunately, while our country fights against terrorism, some of the European countries, with their academics support, terrorist organizations.”
Reminding the permission given to terrorist organization PKK to open a tent around European Council building, while Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu delivered a speech, Istanbul Aydin University president Dr. Aydin added, “ Will Europe, bragging about their modern global values, side with such a shame, lacking standards and principles. The mentality in Belgium, who allows supporting posters and flags, looks the other way and welcomes the members of a terrorist group who intend to divide our countries’unity and integrity and commits massacres, is the same mentality who cancelled the joint conference. Unfortunately, this is an indescribable shameful picture. Cancellation of such an important conference about refugees and immigrants by Sciences-Po Paris dramaticaly shows how the very same Academy had freedom of expression themselves and how much they absorbed it. The decision of the Academy who symphatizes with those who support terrorism will remain as a black day in the history. The decision cannot be accepted. It is a shame.”
The speakers to the conference included EU Ministry Undersecretary Ambassador Engin Soysal, Ambassador of Turkey to Paris Hakki Akil, Istanbul Aydin University President Dr. Mustafa Aydin, on behalf of Sciences Po Paris associate professor Elise Massicard and TUSIAD International Events Coordinator and Paris Bosphorus Institute President Bahadir Kaleagasi along with academics who are experts in their fields.
AN EXAMPLE OF A DOUBLE STANDARD IN INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIA
The cancellation notification sent from Paris Political Science Academy to Istanbul Aydin University, read, “ According to the information we received in regards to an academic whose relationship to the university was broken off due to his signing a petition titled ‘Academics for Peace: We Will Not Be a Part of This Crime.’ We cannot accept that.”
Even in the U.S. ‘Land of the Free’, not only signing a petition which praises any terrorist movement, an academic article within the scope of freedom of expression can be a reason to end an academic’s employment.
In 2006, a book written by two professors titled ‘The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy’ created a storm effect and one of the Harvard University professor was fired for his thoughts about Israil’s influence on Washington’s policies.
Descibing Israel as a strategic burden to the U.S. and thereby stating the obvious, Harvard University professor Stephen Walt was laid off from the university.
