Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığa: “İslamiyet Batı’yı 900 senelik cehalet uykusundan uyandırdı”

Medeniyetler İttifakı Türkiye Eşgüdüm Kurulu Başkanı Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığa, Batı Platformu’nun Mart ayı toplantısının konuğu oldu. Toplantıda “Avrupa Merkezli Medeniyet Anlayışı ve İslam” konusu ele alınırken, Karlığa, İslamiyet’in Batı’yı 900 senelik cehalet uykusundan uyandırdığını ifade etti.

Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlıağa: “Islam awakened the West from 900 years of veil of ignorance.”

Alliance of civilizations Turkey coordination council chairman Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığı was the guest of the Western Platform’s march meeting. While the subject of “European-Based Civilization and Islam” was discussed, Karlığa said that Islam woke the West from 900 years of veil of ignorance in the meeting.

The theme of the March Meeting of the Western Platform, which is one of the think tanks within Istanbul Aydın University, was determined as “European-Based Civilization and Islam”. Alliance of Civilizations Turkey Coordination Council Chairman Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığa revealed the contributions of Islamic civilization to the formation of Western civilization with its historical dimension. Addressing the foundations in the formation of the Western-centered perception of civilization, which has dominated the world since the 18th century, Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığa said the West’s claim to superiority does not only mean anything beyond the strength imposed by Western imperialism and colonialism.

“They were asleep deep in the darkness of the Middle Ages”

Expressing that one of the most important motor forces in the formation of Western culture is Islamic thought, science, culture and art, Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığa said “All the knowledge heritage, thought and culture of the Islamic world was transferred to the West especially in the 12th century. The West, which had fallen asleep in the medieval darkness in those days, started to wake up slowly with the effects from the Islamic world. The Renaissance movement that started in the 13th century moved to the top in the 16th century. The West discovered itself and started to become a world power again with a new interpretation. It also awoke from scholastic and dogmatic sleep. This sleep had dragged the West into a terrible darkness of ignorance for about 900 years. There was a huge gap in science, thought and civilization in the West.”

“We were neither Western nor the West accepted us”

Explaining the implications of Western civilization in Turkey, Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığa said “We had close contact with Western civilization in the 18th century. Our modernization movement started with the Tanzimat reform era in the 19th century. The Republican Period was a period when Westernization was at its peak. Turkey has gone through significant experiences during this period. A complex occurred in the Turkish intellectual against the West from time to time. Sometimes this culture has drawn reaction. Turkey’s progress continues between the Western fascination with Western opposition. Culture clashes was led to the emergence of different concepts in Turkey. There was a coldness against our deep-rooted civilization with a strong history. Insecurity emerged. As a result, the Turkish intellectuals made Westernization a target for themselves. However, we could not maintain our own cultural identity in the full sense, we were neither Western nor the West accepted us. So this conflict still continues and we can see it in every segment of society.”

“No culture is superior to others”

Stating that the perception western culture is superior is a wrong idea, Karlığa said “No culture is superior to others. The fact that western culture is seen as superior comes from the perception of Western Centered Civilization. The West always sees itself in the center of the world. As seen in the maps made in the 16th century, the center of the world starts from the West. However, Western culture is not superior to other cultures. Every civilization and every culture feeds on each other. The West’s claim of superiority does not mean anything beyond the power imposed by Western imperialism and colonialism. As a matter of fact, the situation of immigrants on the Greek border at the moment shows that the imperialist attitude of the West still continues effectively.” Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Aydın presented a memorial plaque to Prof. Dr. Karlığa after the platform.
